MOROCCO – Saturday’s action at the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 delivered high drama, as Nigeria secured qualification but not without a major scare from Tunisia, while East African rivals Tanzania and Uganda fought to a rain-soaked draw. Meanwhile, a tense stalemate in Tangier left Senegal and DR Congo on the brink of the last 16.
Group C: Super Eagles Weather Late Tunisian Storm
Nigeria became the tournament’s second team to guarantee a knockout spot after cruising to a 3-0 lead against Tunisia in Fès, courtesy of goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman. However, the Carthage Eagles launched a stunning comeback, scoring twice late on through Montassar Talbi and a VAR-awarded penalty converted by Ali Abdi. They came agonizingly close to an equalizer in stoppage time, forcing the Super Eagles to survive a frantic finale.
Nigeria held on to secure victory, moving to six points and guaranteeing top spot in Group C with a game to spare.
In the group’s other match, Tanzania and Uganda shared a chaotic 1-1 draw in Rabat. Simon Msuva’s thunderous penalty put Tanzania ahead, but Uganda’s substitute Uche Ikpeazu equalized with a powerful header. The Cranes missed a golden chance to win when Allan Okello blasted a late penalty over the bar, leaving both sides on just one point and facing a difficult final round.
Group D: Senegal and DR Congo Edge Closer After Stalemate
In Tangier, a hard-fought draw served the ambitions of both Senegal and DR Congo. The Leopards took the lead against the run of play when Cédric Bakambu pounced on a rebound. Senegal, who had dominated the first half, responded through their talisman Sadio Mané, who showed composure to tap in after a scramble in the box.
The 1-1 result means Senegal top Group D on four points, ahead of DR Congo only on goal difference. With Benin on three points, both sides are in a strong position to advance to the knockout stage with just their final group matches remaining.
Looking Ahead to the Final Group Matches
Tuesday will decide the final standings. Nigeria, already qualified, faces Uganda, while Tunisia must beat Tanzania to advance. In the tense Group D, Senegal and DR Congo will be heavy favorites to secure the points they need against Botswana and Benin, respectively, to confirm their places in the last 16.
