MOROCCO – The group stage dust has settled at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, setting the stage for a blockbuster Round of 16. Continental giants, including defending champions Nigeria, record-holders Egypt, and powerhouses like Senegal and Algeria, are all through, promising a thrilling start to the knockout phase.

Top of the Bill: Nigeria’s Title Defence Begins

Having secured top spot in Group C, the Super Eagles of Nigeria await their opponent from the best third-placed finishers. Victor Osimhen and his teammates will be looking to build on their strong group stage form as they begin their quest to retain the title.

All eyes will be on the champions as they start their knockout journey, with the weight of expectation firmly on their shoulders.

North African Derby and a Clash of Titans

The draw has produced one immediate classic: a North African derby between Algeria and Morocco. The clash between the 2019 champions and the tournament hosts is arguably the pick of the Round of 16 fixtures, guaranteed to be a fierce and technically gifted contest.

In another heavyweight encounter, Senegal, the 2021 champions, will face off against a resurgent Ivory Coast. The Teranga Lions, led by Sadio Mané, will need to be at their best against an Ivorian side that has grown into the tournament.

Egypt’s Pursuit of History and Other Key Fixtures

Record seven-time champions Egypt, who topped Group A, will face a stern test against the runners-up from Group B. The Pharaohs, with their unparalleled AFCON pedigree, are always a formidable force in the knockout rounds.

Other intriguing matchups include Ghana taking on Mali, and a West African battle between Cameroon and Cape Verde. The Indomitable Lions, seeking to reassert their dominance, will be wary of the Blue Sharks, who have proven to be a tough opponent for anyone.

The Road to the Quarter-Finals

The complete lineup for the Round of 16 marks the beginning of the tournament’s win-or-go-home drama. With no margin for error, the tactical battles will intensify, and the individual brilliance of Africa’s star players will be under the microscope. The stage is set for a weekend of unforgettable football that will define who progresses to the quarter-finals and who sees their dream end.
