NAIROBI – In a significant nod to the growing caliber of Kenyan football officiating, a team of referees from the country has been entrusted with overseeing two high-profile Group B matches at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The Appointed Kenyan Officiating Team
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected a full Kenyan quartet for the assignments. The team will be led by center referee Peter Waweru, who will be assisted by linespersons Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe. Anthony Ogwayo will serve as the fourth official. Their appointments cover two critical matches in a highly competitive group.
Key Group B Fixtures Assigned
The Kenyan officials’ first assignment will be the clash between Ghana and Gabon on Saturday, January 11, 2026, at the Grand Stade de Marrakech. They will return to the same venue three days later, on Tuesday, January 14, to officiate the match between Cape Verde and Gabon.
This appointment is a testament to the consistent performance and professionalism demonstrated by our referees on the continental stage. It reflects positively on the development structures within the Football Kenya Federation.
Group B, featuring Ghana, Gabon, Cape Verde, and a yet-to-be-determined nation from the preliminary rounds, is considered one of the tournament’s most balanced and challenging groups.
A Mark of Continental Recognition
The selection of a full refereeing team from one nation for multiple matches in a major tournament is a mark of significant trust from CAF. It underscores the confidence in the technical ability, integrity, and physical fitness of the Kenyan officials. These appointments follow consistent performances by Kenyan referees in other CAF club competitions and qualifiers over recent years.
For the referees themselves, this represents the pinnacle of their careers and an opportunity to showcase their skills on Africa’s biggest football stage. Their performance in Morocco will be closely watched and could lead to further appointments in the tournament’s knockout phases.
