NAIROBI – In a move that sets the stage for a pivotal leadership decision, former nominated Senator Oburu Odinga has publicly declared his willingness to be the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, should the party opt to contest the race independently.

A Conditional Candidacy

The elder brother of the late party leader Raila Odinga stated that his candidacy is contingent on the party choosing to “go solo” and not enter into a coalition agreement with other political entities ahead of the polls. This declaration positions him as a potential standard-bearer for the party’s base, aiming to maintain the Odinga political legacy within ODM’s leadership structure.

“I will be ODM’s flagbearer if the party runs solo in 2027,” Oburu Odinga stated, framing his readiness as a commitment to the party’s autonomy.

Navigating a Post-Raila Landscape

The announcement comes at a critical juncture for ODM, which is navigating its future following the death of its charismatic leader, Raila Odinga. The party faces significant internal discussions about its strategy, including whether to rebuild its national appeal independently or seek strength through alliances. Oburu Odinga’s statement directly engages with this central strategic debate.

Implications for Party Unity and Strategy

While presenting himself as a candidate, Oburu Odinga’s declaration also serves as a pointed commentary on the party’s direction. By conditioning his bid on a “solo” run, he aligns himself with factions within ODM that may be wary of diluting the party’s identity in a coalition. His bid is likely to energize discussions about succession, legacy, and ODM’s role in Kenya’s evolving opposition politics as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
